This original series of energetic still-life drawings created in the artist’s Richmond studio were part of a much larger group of drawings that combined graphite, oil pastel and oil paint stick on heavy rag papers and rag boards. Among the more well-known of these increasingly expressionistic drawings by Gardner in the 1980's, were those used as the illustrations for the grand opening printed invitation program for Roanoke Virginia’s Center in the Square.
